4G Internet Speeds up to 12 megabit / sec from Verizon Starting on Sunday
Verizon says 4G service at speeds between 5 and 12 megabits per second will be available Sunday, December 5th in a massive launch across the country.
The service will be available at 60 major airports and 38 big metropolitan areas. The point of 4G is to provide internet access to mobile devices that is similar to the speed PC’s are getting while connected to broadband at home. Up until now there has been a big disparity. The combination of higher internet speeds and larger screens on phones and tablets like the iPad should further accelerate internet usage on non-PC devices.
Verizon claims it will have the largest 4G network in the nation by the end of the year, but its competitors disagree. T-mobile flatly states that it will cover twice the population of the new Verizon offering. Clearwire says it will cover more people than Verizon by the end of the year. AT&T plans their rollout next year.
Although the devices are sure to catch up, they aren’t all there yet. Some Android devices are 4G capable and T-Mobile and Sprint have these devices under their programs. Verizon doesn’t yet have a 4G phone but there have been indications for some time that it is working with Apple to introduce a 4G iPhone.
