The much anticipated hybrid plug-in Chevy Volt has finally arrived for sale at Chevy dealerships in select US cities, but the first one being offered for sale will be auctioned off by the manufacturer in support of the Detroit Public Schools Foundation. At time of writing at six full days before the auction closes, the highest bid was $185,000 USD – testament perhaps to the hype and hyperbole surrounding the new model.
Critics and fans alike can’t stop talking about the Chevy Volt. It has won awards from Automobile Magazine, Green Car Magazine, and even the prestigious Motor Trend Car of the Year – all before it rolled off the assembly line. Critics have panned its mileage, cost, and government “subsidy” while others have predicted the start of a revolution in motoring that will ultimately help save the planet. Like most new products, the Volt will likely have its problems, which later models and re-designs will help rectify. The Chevy Volt is available for order from Chevy Dealerships and costs just over $40,000 but may be eligible for tax rebates of up to $7500. Its MPG rating, according to the EPA, is an average equivalent 60 miles per gallon.
