Chevy Volt Sales Spur Doubling of Output
General Motors may announce plans to double their production capacity of the Chevrolet Volt during 2012 to 120,000 units, in order to fully maximise potential sales of the hybrid electric vehicle which has already make quite an impact on the market. Plans are already in place to increase output of the Volt this year to around 25,000 units from the original projection of 10,000 in light of the vehicle’s popularity. GM are presently consulting with a number of suppliers regarding the increased capacity for 2012, which had originally rested at 60,000 proposed units. However, the current estimates are based on the assumption that all necessary components will be available, along with interest and demand remaining at a high level.
The CEO of GM, Dan Akerson, is thought to have rather large plans for the Chevrolet Volt along with the Voltec Hybrid dual-fuel system which is to be featured in a number of other GM brand vehicles. Akerson has indicated that his overall intention is to produce a comprehensive range of hybrid vehicles as the possibility of $120 per barrel oil prices becomes ever closer to a reality. The focus therefore has to rest with heavy investment in technology in order to remain head and shoulders above the competition.
If current Chevy Volt sales are anything to go by, GM has little to worry about with regard to the future of the highly revered hybrid. Furthermore, with oil prices creeping ever closer to the $140 a barrel record high recorded a few years ago, interest in the alternative vehicle market is only likely to gain further momentum.
