Electric Cars No “Greener” than Gasoline Cars?
Environmentally friendly solutions are never far from controversy, with the electric once again facing the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. A new report has made the allegation that electric cars and other vehicles in general are not as kind to the environment as they may seem on the surface. In fact, it is claimed that the all-electric Tesla Roadster, currently touring the United States as part of an electric vehicle demonstration, actually produces more carbon dioxide than a standard gasoline car.
Although releasing no harmful emissions directly, electric vehicles are facing the accusation of simply displacing their carbon footprint, transferring their pollution to the power station rather than the exhaust pipe. In simple terms, it is suggested that the carbon released in the production of the energy used by an electric vehicle is greater than that released by a standard vehicle burning traditional fuel.
While there are hundreds of sources of renewable energy currently being utilized for the production of electricity, they represent nothing more than a fraction of the domestic used for day to day purposes. One of the key reasons for this lies simply in the fact that so-called ‘green’ energy is considerably more expensive than its conventional counterpart.
The study is far from conclusive, though has certainly thrown further speculation on the concept of electric cars as a truly environmentally friendly concept.
