Environmentally Un-Friendly Electric Vehicle Claims Refuted

Environmentally Un Friendly Electric Vehicle Claims RefutedRecent claims that electric cars are often less ‘green’ than their conventional counterparts have been refuted in the strongest possible way, backed up with considerable evidence. It had been suggested that the pollution released in the production of electricity used by zero-emissions vehicle is actually greater than that exhausted from an equivalent vehicle burning fossil fuels. However, an independent report from the Electric Power Research Institute that evaluates CO2 outputs of coal burning power plants versus CO2 outputs from individual vehicles dictates that this is not the case.

According to the report, emissions of CO2 by electric vehicles is around 35 to 60 percent lower than similar cars with combustion engines. This includes regions in which coal-burning power stations operate, directly challenging the allegations regarding such energy production in relation to electric vehicles.

Electric vehicles are also documented for their potential to significantly lower the levels of other harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbon gas, known for their detrimental effects on both health and the environment. The facts certainly point toward electric vehicles offering beneficial merits in built up areas, but their ultimate environmental effect continues to attract debate.

Electric Vehicle News performed a simple mathematical comparison of energy consumption between the Tesla Roadster and its comparable gasoline powered vehicle, the Lotus Elise. http://electric-vehicles-cars-bikes.blogspot.com/2010/03/does-lotus-elise-use-less-energy-than.html The analysis showed that the all-electric Roadster uses about 13% as much energy as its gasoline counterpart.

The controversy comes as the all-electric Tesla Roadster continues its journey across Australia, in a campaign geared toward  further educating the public on the subject of environmentally friendly vehicles.
