Stormy Predictions for Web Hosting’s or is it Cloud Computing’s Future?
Questions have been raised as to the viability of the cloud computing system in light of recent
technical difficulties faced by Amazon. Technical problems caused extensive interruption of the
computer services provided by the company on Friday for the second day in a row. It is thought
that the issue will likely prompt further companies to question as to the safety of relying on remote systems outside of their direct control.
Problems varied significantly but included the inability to access data, general service interruption
and certain sites shutting down without warning. Industry insiders have labeled the incident a significant wake-up call regarding cloud computing, indicating the potential for a possible industry conversion across the board. It is now thought that most will reconsider exactly which operations to entrust with the cloud system, along with which should be kept within corporate walls.
Cloud’s long-term success, though once considered a certainty now looks a little hazy to say the
least. Estimates currently indicate that corporate use of the cloud network could grow by up to 25% every year, reaching a total value of $55.5 billion by the year 2014, though current uncertainty is likely to lead to a degree of mistrust, potentially affecting such predictions somewhat detrimentally.
